The laminar separated flow through the two-dimensional symmetric sudden expansion channel of expansion ratio α has been examined numerically. Navier-Stokes equation (stream function-vorticity formulation was used) was solved by the finite difference method using a pseudo-unsteady technique. For the cases of four different expansion ratios α=2,3, 3.5 and 4, calculations were performed for the range of the Reynolds number 20 ≦Re≦400. A part of the present investigation has already been reported in the Journal of JSME (1995). In this paper, reconsideration was made for the critical Reynolds number Rec (at which the asymmetric flow began) and the influence of expansion ratio α on critical Reynolds number Rec with some additional data of flow. Stream lines, distribution of velocity vector, distributions of pressure and pressure gradient were presented and discussed to clarify the re1ation between asymmetric flow pattern and the dynamic characteristics. |
