The purpose of this paper is to examine Sutemi Horiguchi’s concepts about “garden” in “the non-urban in architecture”. In doing so, his ideas of dwellings will be clarified. Horiguchi aims for a dwelling which is equipped with “facility” suited to modern life and people feel an “attachment” for. However, “facility” and “attachment” are exact opposite to each other. Negativity of materials, such as fragility, returns people’s lives back to the essence and connects both of “facility”, “attachment”. Horuguchi adopts negativity of materials in dwellings. In doing so, he makes three contradicting concepts coexist: “flammable” material, “facility”, and “attachment”. |
