In a tea room, the locations of a toko (alcove), a temaeza (host's mat) and kyakuza(guests’ mats) have been defined by the seating positions of the host and the guests, required by the manners of the tea ceremony. In this paper, we examine the various relations between the ceiling composition and the seating positions of the participants at a tea ceremony, concerning the 38 extant tea rooms. In conclusion, the temaeza and the kyakuza have played an important part in the selection of ceiling composition indispensable to the articulation of the interior space; the concept or philosophy of tea ceremony of the host, a tea master as well as an artist-architect, can be expressed in many ways of ceiling composition, among which the composition with 3 types of ceiling and the temaeza under an ochitenjyou (dropped ceiling) is the most eloquent. |
