The purpose of this paper is to show how translation from Japanese to English, especially that of literary texts, can be a valuable and effective means of teaching English to Japanese students at intermediate level and upwards. In Part I, the authors will present a basic theoretical framework to demonstrate the values of translation, centering around the following three points: (1) translation as a creative and enjoyable task, (2) translation as a collaborative task among teachers and students, and (3) translation as an instructional vehicle to enhance social and cultural awareness. In Part II, one of the authors (Porcaro) will present concrete ideas on and examples of (1) the selection of literary texts for translation, (2) how to plan and implement a translation class, including such points as procedures for giving guidance and direction, methods of revising and correcting, and evaluation, and (3) social themes that can be pesented through literary texts that serve to inform and instruct both students and teachers. |
