Thus, theatre audiences may not be able to understand the act of lying in a drama. The Broadway musical drama, Dear Evan Hansen （2016） is themed on a small lie that leads to lies that are unfortunately published on social media. This paper aims to examine the audience reception of Dear Evan Hansen by gauging their responses to the lie told by the teenager, Evan Hansen in the film version （2021）. Initially, we examine differences between the stage and the film version, indicating certain contradictions in the film’s mise-en-sc_ne based on the director’s interpretation of Evan as ‘a very lonely sympathetic kid’.
