It includes works of some renowned courtly poets in the court of Henry VIII and works written by contemporary poets. Before being printed, courtly poems were usually circulated among closed circles with a limited readership in the form of a manuscript. Editing the first printed anthology of English poetry, presumably targeting a wider audience, Tottel modified the original texts in various ways: one major change was adding titles. This paper mainly looks at the compiled works of Thomas Wyatt, one of the prominent figures in the anthology, and examines the attached titles and other significant alterations.
